Kodiak man killed in float plane crash

Posted: Sunday, October 29, 2000

KODIAK (AP) -- A Kodiak man was killed when his Piper Cub floatplane nosed back into the water during takeoff and came to rest on a ledge.

Alaska State Troopers said the accident occurred Thursday while 53-year-old Jimmie Lee Venable was deer hunting 84 miles southwest of Kodiak city.

A Coast Guard rescue team pulled Venable from the wreckage of the PA-134 and tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital, troopers said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident.
