FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Authorities in Fairbanks said mechanical failure or failure to shut off a water line caused an estimated 182,000 gallons of water flood the basement of the Northern Lights Hotel in Fairbanks.
The mishap occurred Sunday. The boarded-up hotel is for sale and has stood empty for more than a year.
Fairbanks fire Battalion Chief Alan Dick said Golden Heart Utilities discovered a drop in water pressure about 2 p.m. but could not find the leak.
Police, firefighters and a utility worker spent much of the afternoon and evening scouring Fairbanks before they found the cause.
Dick said the hotel's basement was full of water. He said he didn't know the estimated cost of the damage.
Meanwhile, authorities were trying to locate the building owner, who is believed to live in Anchorage.
