Reviving Winter Gear

Posted: Tuesday, October 29, 2002

Proper maintenance of winter gear can help keep seasonal bills low. The following tips can help keep apparel and gear in good condition for years to come:

Waterproof outerwear

Dirt, detergents and fabric softeners are the primary threats to waterproof attire. These factors can inhibit the durable water-repellent finish that causes water to bead up and roll off fabric.

Wash waterproof garments in a nondetergent soap or in plain water. Wash up to four garments in the washing machine with all zippers and Velcro closed. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners, and do not dry clean.

Sleeping bags, comfortors

Use care when washing these items, as down is fragile when wet and can dry unevenly.

Wash small items individually on gentle cycle with a small amount of detergent. Tumble dry with no heat with six to 12 tennis balls. Do not dry clean or use bleach.

Larger items should be professionally cleaned.
