Posted: Sunday, October 30, 2005

The Homer High School boys and girls swim teams made a clean sweep of the Region III Swimming and Diving Championships, winning the team titles in both competitions at the meet Saturday in Palmer.

The Homer boys accumulated 84 points in the team standings, beating out Wasilla by 13 points. The Homer girls scored 78 points, edging Kodiak by seven points. Soldotna was third with 63 points.

Highlighting the individual competition was Soldotna's Eve Green, who won the girls 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes flat and the 100 freestyle in 54.60 seconds.

Kenai's Landon Mishler also won two events, taking the boys 50 freestyle in 22.28 and the 100 freestyle in 49.74.

Mishler also swam on a winning relay, teaming with Adam DeMello, Luke Baumer and Christopher Hall to take the 200 medley relay.

Homer's Kevin Wythe provided an individual championship for the Mariners with his win in the 200 individual medley, clocking a time of 2:04.16, while Brian Ritchie notched a win in the 100 butterfly in 55.92. The Homer boys also won the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

For the Homer girls, Deannie Andree won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.00. The Homer girls also won the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Seward's Jacqueline Van Driessche won the girls 100 backstroke in 1:00.30 and the 50 freestyle in 24.78.

In the diving competition, Soldotna's Sasha Porter and Tory Coursen took second and third, respectively, in the girls meet while Kenai's Andy Knowles was second for the boys.

The top finisher in each swimming event at each region meet automatically qualifies for next week's state championship meet at Bartlett High School in Anchorage. The next 11 fastest swimmers in each event statewide also will earn a spot. The top three divers from each region plus the next eight highest scorers from around the state will go to the state meet, and the top relay from each region meet plus the next four fastest relays from around the state will make the trip to Anchorage.
