In climate of fear, believe in God and fear not

I was 5 years old when I discovered Halloween. We had a porch in front of our house with a large picture window. It was a dark gloomy evening and the porch was poorly lit. I was in the living room and looked out to see, well, I wasn't sure what I saw.

If I remember right, I had to be coaxed out from behind the sofa. No one had told me about Halloween. People didn't come to the door where we used to live. I had discovered fear at a whole new level. Funny thing having a holiday focused on fear. Well, there's Samhein and all the history, but it's the fear factor that captures the attention of so many.

Fear can immobilize us, stop us and cause us to change the course of our direction.

You may remember the story lines: "Where do you travel so fast, Chicken Little?" asked Goosey Loosey.

"Ah, Goosey Loosey," said Chicken Little, "The sky is falling. Henny Penny and Ducky Daddles and I go to tell the king."

"How do you know that the sky is falling, Chicken Little?" asked Goosey Loosey.

"I saw it with my eyes, I heard it with my ears and a bit of it fell on my head," said Chicken Little.

"I will go with you," said Goosey Loosey.

There are a lot of "sky falling" scenarios out there. Some gracious and sincere people get tied emotionally to these concepts. It is like a weight on them.

The cry is, "God is judging! Doom and gloom! End of our nation! The antichrist! Economic collapse!" The list goes on.

Fear is a powerful emotion and it is often driven by the media. Why? Fear sells. However, I am of the mind that no matter who is elected the world will not end, recessions will come and go, the antichrist will probably not be an American president and when Jesus comes back it will be good for the church.

Oh yes, if "they" are watching me (whoever "they" may be) with my TV, their satellites or listening to my phone calls, then "they" must be bored.

When we hear from the Chicken Little's in life we need to sift through truth and fear. If you are a child of God and your concepts are driven by fear, you are not hearing from God.

King Solomon wrote: My child be warned: There is no end of opinions ready to be expressed. Studying them can go on forever and become very exhausting! Ecclesiastes 12:12 (NLT). (Solomon must have seen my e-mail inbox.)

God has not given us a spirit of fear. Fear is associated with unbelief. Fear is contagious; fear robs us of peace, of rest and of confidence. It is unhealthy and destructive.

God has given to us a spirit of love and of a sound mind. No wonder the Bible says so many times, "Fear Not!"
