KETCHIKAN (AP) -- A man was arrested after he swallowed what appeared to be heroin during a scuffle with police in an airport terminal, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troy S. Smart, 30, of Ketchikan, was under observation at Ketchikan Correctional Center on Thursday after being transferred from a local hospital, said police spokesman Greg Wilkinson. Police obtained a search warrant on Thursday to confiscate the substance when it is retrieved, Wilkinson said.

Sgt. Lonny Piscoya suffered a broken leg and ankle during the scuffle on Wednesday and was treated for his injuries and released, police said.

Smart began fighting with airport police and Piscoya when a plastic bag containing what appeared to be tar heroin was found in the man's luggage, police said.

Smart grabbed the plastic bag during the scuffle and swallowed it, police said.

Airport police alerted the Alaska State Troopers after receiving a tip that a man was carrying drugs, Wilkinson said. Smart was confronted while attempting to board a plane to Seattle, Wilkinson said.

Smart is charged with second degree assault and tampering with evidence. He could face additional drug charges, Wilkinson said.

Smart is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Wilkinson said.
