FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The True North gold mine has been honored for its safety record.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration gave federal recognition to mine operator Fairbanks Gold Mining because True North employees worked more than 135,500 hours last year with no time lost due to worker injury.
The mine, 20 miles north of Fairbanks, employed about 100 workers last year. Construction of the mine began in early 2001 and mining began in the spring.
The mine recently received government approval to double operations to 600 acres. It is expected to yield about 500,000 ounces of gold.
