State Parks recruiting volunteers for 2003

Volunteers for the 2003 season are being recruited for work in Alaska State Parks. The Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation is seeking campground hosts to assist rangers with visitor contact and campground maintenance. Hosts live in their own RV or trailer and stay in a campsite provided free of charge. An expense allowance is available if a minimum time commitment is met.

Other volunteer positions include ranger assistant, trail crew, park caretaker and natural history interpreter. Housing and expense allowances are available if the minimum time commitment is met.

For more information on these full-time volunteer positions, request a copy of the volunteer catalog from Volunteer Coordinator, Alaska State Parks, 550 W 7th Ave., Suite 1380, Anchorage, AK 99501-3561. The catalog also is available on the Internet at www.alaskastateparks.org.

For residents unable to make a full-time commitment, plenty of flexible or part-time volunteer opportunities are available. Contact the State Parks office in Soldotna at P.O. Box 1247, Soldotna, AK 99699 or by phone at 262-5581 for volunteer opportunities on the Kenai Peninsula.

Federal subsistence comments due today

Written comments on proposed revisions to federal subsistence regulations that allow for cash sales on subsistence-caught fish are due today.

The regulation change proposes to allow "customary trade" between rural subsistence users and others, including cash sales of fish to non-seafood industry buyers. The Federal Subsistence Board is expected to make a determination on the new rules at its Jan. 2003 meeting. Comments must be postmarked by today and sent to: Office of Subsistence Management, 3601 C Street #1030, Anchorage, AK 99503. Comments may also be faxed to (907) 786-3898 or e-mailed to pete_probasco@fws.gov
