Troopers appoint first female lieutenant

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Alaska State Troopers have promoted three officers, including the first woman with the troopers to reach the rank of lieutenant.

Sgt. Julia Grimes is an 18-year trooper veteran. She has held numerous assignments and recently supervised the State Drug Enforcement Unit's airport interdiction team.

In her new role, Grimes will join the director's staff at trooper headquarters in Anchorage, supervising permits and licensing.

Sgt. Randal Hahn also was promoted to lieutenant. Hahn was deputy commander of the Department of Public Safety training academy in Sitka since March 1999. He is being transferred to Palmer to serve as a deputy commander of the B Detachment.

Trooper Karl Erickson was promoted to sergeant. He will move from Soldotna to Glennallen to serve as post supervisor there.
