Wrestlers warm up engines at Skyview

Skyview, Homer, Ketchikan and Soldotna warmed up for the tons of wrestling that will be offered at the Peninsula Duals Friday and Saturday at Nikiski by doing tons of wrestling Thursday night at Skyview.

Soldotna defeated Ketchikan, 51-16, and Homer, 64-22, in dual meets, while Skyview defeated Ketchikan, 34-27, and Homer, 48-11, in dual meets.

"We've been saying for years that we're a young team, but that we're going to be pretty good one day," Soldotna coach Sarge Truesdell said. "Maybe we've finally arrived. We did a good job wrestling tonight."

Truesdell was particularly tickled with the way his team wrestled against Ketchikan. Soldotna won a lot of close matches against the Kings, and only came out on the bottom of three matches.

Colten Goracke picked up a big victory, scoring a major decision over Ketchikan's Matt Haseltine, who is ranked second in the state.

Against Homer, Matt Vasile pinned Louden Greiner. Vasile had lost to Greiner earlier this season.

Finally, Truesdell like the continued improvement of Matt Hicks, a 171-pounder. Hicks, only a freshman, won both his matches Thursday. Truesdell said Hicks went out for wrestling to stay in shape for football and basketball, but it has turned out that he's a pretty good wrestler, too.

Homer coach Chris Perk said he got the usual up-and-down performance from his group of freshmen and sophomores.

Two of those wrestlers scored pretty big victories in the dual meet against Skyview. Jim Pollack defeated Vance Gaddis 4-3 and Tommy James topped Brandon Cleveland 7-3. Perk said James had lost to Cleveland four or five times in the last two years.

The coach also liked the continued solid performances from Monte Garroutte at 125. Garroutte won twice Thursday and has only lost one match this year.

Skyview coach Neldon Gardner said his team acted fatigued in sweeping both dual meets.

"I'm not sure if it was because they stayed up a little late on Halloween or what, but we just looked tired today," Gardner said. "It didn't look like we were ready to wrestle."

Gardner did like what he saw out of Dallas Seavey at 112 pounds and Jake Savely at 130. Those two both were undefeated Thursday.

Mike Lasky, a 125-pounder, went 1-1, but Gardner still liked the way he wrestled in losing to Garroutte. Garroutte had pinned Lasky in a tournament final this year, but Thursday Lasky managed to stay out of a pin Thursday.

Finally, Gardner said the other highlight of the evening was when Ben Nabinger picked up an 8-5 victory over Ketchikan's Steve Haseltine.
