SoHi girls take region crown

Kodiak boys grab championship away from Mariners

The Soldotna High School girls swimming and diving team won its fifth straight Region III title, holding off a competitive field at the Region III Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday in Valdez.

On the boys side, Kodiak unseated the two-time defending champion Homer Mariners to claim the region crown.

Leading the way for the Soldotna girls was Abby Kiffmeyer, who set a new region record of 59.79 seconds in winning the 100-yard butterfly. Kiffmeyer bettered her own record of 1:00.13, set last year.

Kiffmeyer also won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.20 as the Stars amassed 79 points in the team standings. Colony, Homer and Valdez battled to a three-way tie for second place, each with 64 points.

Other region title winners for the Stars included the 200 medley relay squad of Marit Hartvigson, Karina Petersen, Kiffmeyer and Eve Green, which won in 1:55.37.

Tory Coursen and Sasha Porter provided first- and second-place finishes, respectively, for the Stars in the 1-meter diving competition. Coursen finished with a score of 295.10 while Porter netted 291.50.

Homer's Renae Rykaczewski took a region title in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.78 while Seward's Jacqueline Van Driessche swam to a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 50 freestyle in 25.03 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.66.

In the boys competition, the Kodiak Bears won the team title on the strength of a first-place finish by their 200 freestyle relay and a pair of first-place performances turned in by Greg Rose, who took the 100 butterfly in 53.98 and the 200 individual medley in 2:02.57.

Leo Grasso made four trips to the top step of awards podium for the Soldotna boys, winning the 100 freestyle in 49.72, taking the 100 backstroke in 56.53, and teaming with Keegan Birchfield, Nathan Grabowski and Aladean Marey to win the 200 medley relay. Grasso anchored the winning 400 freestyle team that included Nolan Schmidt, Marey and Grabowski.

Grabowski won a region title in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.15,

Homer's Daryl Wythe claimed a win for the Mariners with his 23.78-second performance in the 50 freestyle.

Also at the meet, Kenai Central's top performers included Amanda Keen, who was sixth in the girls 100 freestyle in 59.93, and Amy Jahrig, who finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.57.

Luke Baumer was sixth for the Kardinals in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.90.

Skyview High School's boys 200 medley relay of Justin Jicha, J.M. Revis, Merrick Jackinsky and Matt Bates was sixth at the meet with a time of 2:04.69.
