SoHi girls, Homer boys retain titles

Posted: Sunday, November 03, 2002

"They're going like crazy."

This was Skyview High swimming coach Dennis Reger's words to describe the number of school and regional records that were shattered Saturday at the Region III Swimming and Diving Championships at Soldotna High. Eight new regional and seven new school marks were set as Soldotna's girls and Homer's boys took team championships.

Homer coach Bridget Kuhns said the number of boys earning points in competition helped the Mariners cruise past Soldotna's boys with 98 points to win the team title. SoHi had 85 points.

She said her team didn't taper down practices to reserve energy for the Alaska School Activities Association State Championship next week in Anchorage. She said Homer came to regionals to win.

"Depth is the key word," she said. "We're doing just what we came here to do."

Stars coach Sohail Marey, who was named Region III Coach of the Year, concurred with Kuhns' account for Homer's boys victory. His boys fell runner-up to the Mariners for the second straight year, even after taking first place in seven events over Homer. He said the state meet would be a different story, however.

"Here, you can win eight events and not win regionals," Marey said. "Whoever wins the state (meet) is going to have to win some individual events and some relays."

Marey's girls team dominated the day, logging victories in all but one of the relays and winning six individual events. The team scored 109 points, with a sizable margin between itself and second-place Colony, with 59 points.

The Stars opened the meet setting back-to-back region records in the boys and girls 200-yard medley relays.

"Oh yeah, this sets momentum for state," said Soldotna senior and relay anchor Jenna Syverson following the race. "We wanted this all season."

The girls team finished with a time of 1 minute, 52.40 seconds, besting the previous mark of 1:53.31 set by the girls' relay in 2000. The boys clocked a 1:41.46 to outperform the 1:43.31 time set in 1991 by Soldotna.

Syverson was named Girls Swimmer of the Year after winning the 50 and 100 freestyle races, setting a new region and school record for the 100. Syverson swam a 53.70, beating last year's record of 53.86 set by Sarah Brettrager of Colony.

Syverson also contributed to the school- and region-record setting win in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing as anchor with a time of 1:41.24 and besting the team's time of 1:42.63 from a year ago.

"This has been a great meet for everyone," she said.

Among those who had a great meet was Syverson's freshman relay teammate, Eve Green, who also out-swam fellow Star Keely Chavka to win the girls 200. Green said all that mattered was that the two finish first and second, which they did.

"I really wanted it to be me and Keely at the finish," Green said.

Chavka took first place in the 500 freestyle, however, with a time of 5:35.01.

"That one felt really good," she said about her swim. "They don't always feel good."

Abby Kiffmeyer won the 100 backstroke and set a region record of 1:00.13 in the 100 butterfly.

"I really wanted that record really bad," she said. "I wasn't thinking about my opponents. That always makes me tense up. I was racing the clock."

Colony's girls 400 freestyle relay team set a region record of 3:45.85 handing the Stars their only relay loss. The team consisted of Sarah Brettrager, sisters Elise and Nancy Long, and Jorin Klawitter. The Knights' girls 200 freestyle team also set a school record with their second-place finish, beating the old record of 1:44.14 by three seconds.

Kenai Central senior Rachel Knowles was named Girls Diver of the Year and won the 1-meter diving event with a final cumulative meet score of 338.30 points earned over three days of competition.

She earned a total of 15 points for her first dive Saturday, but failed to garner double digits on her second dive, a forward 2 1/2 somersault with a high difficulty rating.

"I threw that one for the first time this morning," she said. "I rushed the board."

Seward's Jacqueline Van Driessche won the 100 breaststroke, beating favored Karina Peterson of Soldotna.

"She's always been somebody I had to beat," Van Driessche said. "She's just a good person to race."

Soldotna senior Nick Sorrell was named Boys Swimmer of the Year after swimming personal bests for victories in 200 and 100 freestyle races and anchoring winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Ty Mann-Schweigert, Clayton Harrison and Leo Grasso swam the 200 with Sorrell, and Aladean Marey joined Grasso, Mann-Schweigert and Sorrell in the 400.

Both relays set regional records, swimming to a 1:29.38 in the 200 and 1:00.13 in the 100.

"The day sure didn't come easily," Sorrell said.

Mann-Schweigert won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.40, but said he still wanted to improve to 21 seconds.

Harrison inched past Homer's Andy Vait to win the 100 breaststroke race with a time of 1:03.37. Homer's Evan Smith won the 100 butterfly in 53.73 and Mariner senior Ben Kuhns won the 100 backstroke.

Skyview swimmers set four school records. Ashley Rische swam to a new 500 freestyle time of 5:51 and Stephanie Lambe broke the school's 100 freestyle record of 57.12 with a new time of 57.03.

The 200 freestyle relay team improved on the old mark of 1:48.84 with a 1:48.48, and the girls 400 relay team broke the old record of 4:03.34 by swimming to a new time of 4:02.81.
