Support of basketball league gives kids chance to learn skills, have fun

Posted: Monday, November 03, 2003

The Boys and Girls Club's first- and second- grade basketball league just concluded its 2003 season. Involved in this recreational basketball program were more than 120 kids on 12 different teams from all over the central peninsula area. Kids had the opportunity to be part of a team, learn some basketball skills, make new friends and, most importantly, have fun!

Hats off to the many people involved in making the season run smoothly: Phil Sonnichsen for presenting the coaches' clinic; James Clark and Gavin Koester-Backstrom for donating their time and refereeing skills; and parents for their positive, encouraging support of the kids and the referees.

Special thanks to all the coaches for their many hours spent working with the kids: Mike Ashwell, Meggie Steinbeck, Rosa McDonald, Laura Moore, Breezy Saltzgiver, Tom Moore, Richard Shirnberg, Sovala Kisena, Cole Chappell, Dave Blossom, Ward Romans, Jan Feller, Roland James, Glenn Godfrey, Scott Nygard, Bryan Powers, Blake Gabriel and Adam Cooper. What a great asset to the community these individuals are!

Also, the Boys and Girls Club greatly appreciates the businesses of the community who gave their financial support by sponsoring a team: Country Foods, Moore's Landscaping, Kenai Peninsula Orthopaedics, Trustworthy Hardware and C&C Bobcat Services. The program could not run without their help.

Kathy Ehrhardt, Athletic programs director Boys and Girls Club
