During an election year, it's become popular to bash government, so when we Alaskans have a department that works, it is important to spread the word.
Cohoe FireWise simply wouldn't function without the help of the Alaska Department of Transportation, and in particular, the road crews and personnel of the Soldotna and Ninilchik stations. We absolutely depend on the Aurora Gravel Pit for slash disposal. We figure everyone who brings in slash is one less fire to worry about. AK DOT makes the gravel pit available, even while they use it too. They periodically pile up the slash for us. And each year they smooth it out after they hold grader classes.
But it isn't just the slash disposal. Halloween night we held the annual Trunk or Treat there and it was great. Last year, we had 16 trunks and between 60-80 kids attended. This year we had 22 trunks and between 80-100 kids! The weather made it impossible to torch off the huge slash piles, but we had three bonfires for warming and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows.
We'll try to have a community bonfire on Jan. 1 for New Years, so put that on your calendar.
There are a lot of volunteers for FireWise and Trunk or Treat. There are businesses that donate, CES always brings a fire truck and coffee (Thank you Kaladi Bros. and Chief Morachek!). But it would all be impossible without the Alaska Department of Transportation going above and beyond the call of duty. This is our opportunity to thank them.
When you see one of your representatives next, please thank them and ask them to pass it on to AK DOT.
