Seward student attacked by bear

Posted: Wednesday, November 03, 2010

A brown bear attacked a Seward-area student on Tuesday morning, causing minor injuries, according to school district leaders.

The student, whose name and age are being withheld by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, was walking from his house to the bus stop around 7:30 a.m. when the bear charged, according to Superintendent Steve Atwater.

The student was taken to Providence Seward Hospital and released to his parents.

The school district is reminding parents that bears are not yet in hibernation, and if possible, parents should wait at the bus stop with their children.

"It's a real relief that it wasn't more serious," Atwater said.
