Bruins coach gets revenge stops Devils' six-game winning streak

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Joe Thornton scored a power-play goal and set up another as the Boston Bruins defeated New Jersey 2-1 Saturday, snapping the Devils' six-game winning streak.

Martin Lapointe also scored, and Byron Dafoe had 19 saves as the Bruins won for the first time in four games (1-0-1-2). The win in regulation also marked the first time in five games Boston didn't have to go to overtime.

Kings 4, Thrashers 1

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles held Atlanta without a shot for the first 21:45 of the game and got a pair of third-period goals from Eric Belanger en route to a 4-1 victory Saturday.

Randy Robitaille and Steve Heinze scored first-period goals and Felix Potvin made 15 saves for the Kings, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Rangers 5, Panthers 3

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Radek Dvorak and Michael York scored less than three minutes apart late in the third period to spark New York to a come-from-behind victory over Florida.

Dvorak's backhander tied the score at 3 with 6:26 left in the third period. York put a rebound of an Eric Lindros shot past Roberto Luongo to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead with 3:47 remaining.

Penguins 2, Lightning 1, OT

PITTSBURGH -- Billy Tibbetts scored at 1:51 of overtime to give Pittsburgh a win over Tampa Bay.

Johan Hedberg stopped 29 shots and Aleksey Morozov also scored for the Penguins.

Flames 6, Canadiens 2

CALGARY, Alberta -- Ron Petrovicky scored two of Calgary's five third-period goals as the Flames beat Montreal.

Petrovicky put the Flames ahead 3-2 then 4-2 for his first two of the season.

Blues 4, Capitals 1

ST. LOUIS -- Pavol Demitra scored his ninth goal of the season to snap a 1-1 tie and goalie Brent Johnson won his fifth consecutive start as St. Louis beat Washington.

Keith Tkachuk had a goal and two assists to help the Blues win their third consecutive game.

Doug Weight and Al MacInnis also scored for St. Louis.

Peter Bondra scored for the Capitals.

Predators 4, Stars 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Denis Arkhipov scored a goal and an assist and Martin Erat had two assists as Nashville beat Dallas.

Vitali Yachmenev, Tom Fitzgerald and Scott Walker also scored for the Predators.

Joe Nieuwendyk scored for the Stars.

Sharks 5, Canucks 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Jeff Jillson, Scott Thornton and Marco Sturm set a franchise record with three goals in 36 seconds as San Jose won its fourth straight by beating Vancouver.

Owen Nolan and Mark Smith also scored for San Jose.

The third-period explosion broke open a tense, fight-filled game.

Matt Cooke scored for the Canucks.
