Posted: Sunday, November 04, 2007

Nikiski resident Keith Arden Brail died of cancer on Oct. 26, 2007 at the home of Paula and Wade Lacey in Anchorage. He was 60.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Paradisos Restaurant, 811 Frontage Road, Kenai, on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. For directions, please call 283-2222.

Keith was born Oct. 8, 1947 in Ashtabula, Ohio and graduated from Ashtabula Harbor High School in 1965. In 1970, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a minor in psychology. He successfully completed two courses in petroleum technology at Kenai Peninsula Community College in 1979.

Keith has been a resident of Alaska since 1978, mostly living in Nikiski. His employment includes Ohio State University Hospital from 1970 to 1975, The Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio from 1975 to 1978, Peninsula Medical Center in Soldotna from 1978 to 1979, Tesoro in Kenai from 1979 to1982 and BP Exploration for 25 years, from Sept. 7, 1982 until Sept. 28, 2007.

Mr. Brail was a member of the American Rifle Association, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). Flying was his passion and he was close to completing his favorite project of building his Glastar tail dragger. He loved fishing, hunting, economics, boating, wood-working, computers, reading, and his Shih Tzu dog of 11 years, Cosmo.

The family writes, "Keith was a very intelligent, quiet, peaceful man. He enjoyed working with his wife on his projects and sharing ideas and plans. He considered his co-workers at BP Exploration his second family as he worked there for 25 years on a two-week-on, two-week-off schedule. He was especially close to his son-in-law and wife, Wade and Paula Lacey, and their son, Conrad, who gave him comfort and friendship and love daily for the last two months of his life. Keith greeted them smiling morning and evening. Keith had great dignity and courage right to the end with his wife and son-in-law at his side."

Mr. Brail is preceded in death by his father, George Brail.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta Amanda Brail; mother, Isabel Brail; son, Kevin Brail and his wife, Samantha, and their daughter, Stella; sister, Kathleen Imhof and her husband, Lee, and their children Katie and David; son-in-law, Wade Lacey and his wife, Paula and their son, Conrad and daughters, Laurie and Caitlyn. Other children include Barbara Coon, Daniel Coon and his wife, Amber, Clifford Coon, John Rutherford Jr. and Bryan Rutherford. He had 14 grandchildren as well as many extended family members.

Keith's wife will scatter his ashes across the inlet according to Keith's wishes.

Local arrangements were provided by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
