Searchers find missing hunter's ATV

Posted: Sunday, November 05, 2000

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An all-terrain vehicle used by Alfred Kochendorfer was found Friday, but searchers came across no sign of the missing Palmer hunter Saturday.

State troopers said two rabbit hunters found the ATV used by Kochendorfer, 49, along a trail in the Jim Creek area at about 6 p.m.

Kochendorfer has been missing since Oct. 27. He left on the ATV for a hunting trip near the Knik Glacier and was expected back after three or four days.

Searchers have been looking for him since Wednesday.

Troopers responded to the area where the ATV was found with a helicopter and ground searchers covered a 100-yard perimeter surrounding the ATV without finding Kochendorfer.

The search resumed Saturday with about 75 volunteers, including members of the Mat-Su Motormushers, five search dogs with their handlers, one Civil Air Patrol airplane and the trooper helicopter.

The search will resume Sunday.
