Oilers sign shortstop
The Peninsula Oilers recently signed Bobby Spano for the 2001 season. Spano is a junior at Florida Atlantic University and is a recent transfer from Florida State University.
The 5-foot-10 shortstop joins the Oilers along with teammate Nelson Lopez. Spano is from Naples, Fla., and is majoring in communications.
Florida Atlantic was also home to lefty Carmen Cali, a mainstay of the 1999 Oilers pitching staff. Cali signed with the St. Louis Cardinals Single A team at New Jersey of the New York-Penn League where he posted a 4.89 earned-run average in 14 starts. Cali struck out 55 batters in 70 innings pitched.
