SoHi boys, girls swimmers sweep team titles for second straight year

Region III still guided by Stars

Posted: Sunday, November 05, 2000

The Soldotna boys and girls swimming and diving teams continued to dominate Region III Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Region III Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Stars boys and girls swept the region titles for the second year in a row. For the boys, it was the 20th region victory in the 21 attempts the Stars have had at the title since the school opened in 1980. For the girls, it was their second title in a row.

The Soldotna boys rolled up 97 points to defeat runner-up Valdez by 40 points. Homer finished third with 55 points.

Soldotna seniors Joshua Gemmell and Lucas Petersen played the biggest part in the victory, as each had two individual victories and were part of winning relay efforts.

Petersen collected victories in the 100-yard backstroke and 100 butterfly. No swimmer got within two seconds of him in either event. The senior also was on the victorious 200- and 400-freestyle relay teams. As for Gemmell, he turned in similarly dominant wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. No swimmer came within three seconds of Gemmell in his two victories. He also was on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

The only other boy from the peninsula to pick up a region victory was Homer's Evan Smith, who took the 200 individual medley. Soldotna's Nick Sorrell was the favorite in the event, and he had posted times this year that were superior to Smith's winning mark of 2:11.43. However, Sorrell was disqualified in Friday's preliminaries.

Petersen, Gemmell and Smith all earn automatic trips to state thanks to their wins, as does Soldotna's three relay teams. The rest of the peninsula's swimmers will have to wait to see if they had one of the 12 fastest times in the state after all of the region winners are subtracted. Relay teams have to have the next four fastest times after all the region winners are subtracted.

The Soldotna girls shook off a challenge from Homer to win going away with 102 points. Homer, the runner-up, tallied 74.

The Stars displayed depth in winning the title, getting individual wins from three different people and taking two of the three relays.

Soldotna's individual wins came from Keely Chavka in the 200 freestyle (2:06.11), Jenna Syverson in the 50 freestyle (24.99) and Abby Kiffmeyer in the 100 butterfly (1:03.18).

The Mariners actually won as many individual events as the Stars did and also took the 400 freestyle relay, but in the end they couldn't match Soldotna's depth. Homer's Monica Ulmer was the only girl at the meet to take to individual events. Ulmer came out on top of the 200 individual medley (2:16.90) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.51). The Mariners' other win came from Erin Pate in the 100 backstroke (1:02.91).

Soldotna's Petersen took home male swimmer of the year honors with his performance, while Monica Ulmer took home female swimmer of the year honors.

Valdez coach Brad Hagan, who guided his girls to third and his boys to a surprise second place finish, was named coach of the year.
