Food Bank receives grant
Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger has approved a one year grant of $9,000 to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. The purpose of the grant is to help pay the salary of a full-time staff person to assist with food and service requests.
Big brothers sought
The Kenai Peninsula United Way is looking for adult males to serve in the capacity of "big brothers" for area boys. Interested mean must be over 21, agree to a background check and be willing to dedicate to a long-term arrangement. For more information, call 283-9500.
Hospice to hold open house
Hospice of the central peninsula is holding an open house at their new office, 312 Tyee St. in Soldotna, Nov. 14 from noon to 4 p.m. The open house is in honor of National Hospice Month and gives the community an opportunity to visit the hospice office, meet the staff, enjoy refreshments and obtain information on hospice programs and services. Other hospice activities for November include a workshop for the bereaved on Wednesday and volunteer training for people interested in becoming a community bereavement volunteer for hospice on Nov. 17.
Homer Community Schools announcements
The Landscapes: Acrylic Painting class date has been changed to Nov. 27 and 28 and the Snowmobile Safety and Maintenance class has been rescheduled to Dec. 6.
The Healthy Holiday Cooking and Nutritious Meals Made Easy classes have spaces available.
Parents and children can team up to shoot free throws and win a Thanksgiving turkey. The age groups are 5 to 6, 7 to 8, 9 to 10 and 11 to 12. There is a $5 per team entry fee. Other prizes are available.
People interested in being a tutor or in need of a tutor can call the community schools office.

SeaLife Center announces special events
The Alaska SeaLife Center will celebrate Veterans Day Nov. 11 by offering free admission and a 10 percent discount in the Discovery Gift Shop to past and present military personnel. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel and U.S. postal workers will also be admitted free on Veteran's Day. To receive complimentary admission, visitors must show valid employee identification at the ticketing counter.
The ASLC also offers seniors over the age of 60 a 50 percent discount on admission every Sunday.
Kenai Library announcements
The Kenai Library Commission will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Toddler story time is Wednesday at 11 a.m. and preschool story time is Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
The Totem Tracers will meet Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. for Research Saturday. Knowledgeable volunteers from the Totem Tracers Genealogy Society are available to help people with family research. Research Saturday is open to the public and free of charge.
The library will be closed Monday for Veteran's Day.
