Search called off for missing hunter

Posted: Monday, November 06, 2000

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The search for a missing hunter was called off Sunday after five days of looking failed to turn up the Palmer man, Alaska State Troopers said.

Dozens of volunteers were out Sunday looking for Alfred Kochendorfer, 49, who left on an all-terrain vehicle Oct. 27 to go hunting near Butte. Kochendorfer was expected to return in three or four days. When he didn't, a search was launched last Wednesday.

Greg Wilkinson, spokesman for the Alaska State Troopers, said the full-scale search would be ended, but the case would be kept open with Kochendorfer listed as a missing person.

Two rabbit hunters found Kochendorfer's ATV over the weekend along a trail in the Jim Creek area. However, a 100-yard perimeter search failed to find him.

About 40 people on ATVs searched for Kochendorf on Sunday. Twice as many were out on ATVs on Saturday.
