Hero of the week

I just received a thank you letter for helping at the state cross country meet at Skyview High School, Sept. 30. I received this letter from Whitney Leman, a runner from Ninilchik High School. She wanted to thank me for helping her at the finish line. Not only did she thank me, she also wanted to congratulate my daughter on her race and send pictures. To say I am touched is putting it lightly. I heard young men and women thanking the volunteers, for their time as they panted for breath after their long race. So this is my thank you to all the athletes who I have been privileged to help during the past cross country running season. I have volunteered for this sport as well as the sports over the past several years. If ever you are disheartened by what the media says about our youth, attend any one of the many sports our children have the opportunity to participate in. Instead of just watching, ask how you can help. There is no better seat in the house at a swim meet than down at the deck as a timer, or at a ski or running event than at the finish line.

Whitney, thank you for being someone I am very proud of.

See you at the next sporting event.
