Search continues for Elim man missing after snowmachine accident

Posted: Tuesday, November 07, 2000

NOME (AP) -- A man from the village of Elim is missing and feared dead after a snowmachine accident late last week, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Garrett Nakarak, 19, and Tony Moore, 22, had been traveling to Koyuk Thursday night when they got lost in a snowstorm. The two men turned around to return to Elim. While they were attempting to cross thin ice their snowmachines fell into open water.

Moore was able to make it out of the water and to a nearby cabin for shelter, but investigators think Nakarak was not so lucky. While searchers continue to look for Nakarak, investigators fear he may never have made it out of the water.

Moore was found trying to walk back home on Friday. He was taken to the Elim clinic and treated for mild hypothermia.

Nakarak's snowmachine was recovered from the water on Saturday.
