Area women set to serve

Chennault, Gifford, Hutchings named to state boards

Posted: Monday, November 07, 2005

Gov. Frank Murkowski on Friday named three Soldotna women to statewide boards.

Dr. Regina Chennault was appointed to the state's Violent Crimes Compensation Board, while former Soldotna Police Chief Shirley Gifford was named to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. In addition, Linda Hutchings was named to serve on the statewide Workers' Compensation Board.

Both Chennault and Hutchings' appointments last through March 1, 2009, while Gifford will serve on the ABC board through March 1, 2007.

Gifford, who retired as police chief in 2003, said she applied to serve on the board because she has worked with people in the alcohol industry in the past and because she wanted to stay active in public service.

"I felt like it was something I was comfortable with," she said. "I just want to keep involved and I thought this would be a good way to do that."

Hutchings owns Hutchings Chevrolet and Glacier Pontiac in Soldotna with her husband, Dave. She, too is no stranger to public service, most recently serving as a member of Soldotna's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

Chennault is a general surgeon who owns a private practice in Soldotna, where she moved in 2003 from Colorado.

All three of the appointments must be confirmed by the Legislature before becoming official.

The appointments were announced Friday.
