Soldotna began its season by defeating Chugiak, while Kenai Central lost to North Pole, on Thursday in the Peninsula Ice Challenge at the Soldotna Sports Center.
The Stars topped Chugiak 3-1, giving up a goal just seconds into the game, before shutting out the Mustangs the rest of the way. Brad Duwe tied the game in the first period on a power-play goal, with assists from Daniel Markstrom and Sean Endsley.
In the second period, Eric Johnson scored a power-play goal on an assist by Markstrom. Endsley, on an assist from Markstrom, finished off the scoring with an empty-net goal in the third.
Dawson Pearson, William Granger and Stephen Kendrick each had a period in goal for Soldotna, with Kendrick giving up the lone goal.
Kenai opened up the tournament with an 8-1 loss to North Pole. The Kardinals were outshot 57-11 in the game, but Kenai goalie Alex Koch managed to keep the Kardinals in the game for the first two periods. Koch made 17 saves on 18 shots in the first period and 18 saves on 20 shots in the second period.
In the third period, the Patriots broke free for five goals. DJ Carnley had a hat trick for the Patriots, while Cody Kurkowski and Matt Sanford had two goals apiece. Jared Linnell had five assists.
Kenai got on the board with 1:18 to play in the game, when Avery Palchikoff lit the lamp.
