Stars take Ice Challenge

The Soldotna hockey team finished 3-0 in the Peninsula Ice Challenge to win the event.

The Stars finished the tourney by topping Kenai Central 1-0. With 7:32 left in the game, Zack Waters tipped in a shot from Nick Pokryfki for the lead. William Granger kept the lead with several nice saves, including stopping a penalty shot.

In Friday's game, Soldotna scored a dramatic 3-2 victory over East.

The two teams were tied at 2-2 when, with under a minute left and with the puck in Soldotna's end, East decided to pull its goalie. The Thunderbirds were able to keep the pressure on and get a few shots on goal, but with the clock winding down, Soldotna's Josh Stinnett got the puck and his stick and wristed it to the other end. The puck nestled in the back of East's empty net with 0.2 seconds left to give the Stars the victory.

In the first period, East's Kainoa Kitagawa started the scoring before Soldotna tied the game, on a goal from Sean Endsley, right before the end of the period.

The Thunderbirds took the lead again to start the third period when Bradley Hudson scored. Josh Kerkvliet tied the game for the Stars and set up Stinnett's game winner.

William Granger had 27 saves for Soldotna.

Also Friday, Homer and Kenai played to a 1-1 tie.

"I'm excited to see how much Homer has improved," Kenai coach Pete Iverson said. "I think they're going to surprise some people this year."

Kenai grabbed the lead in the third period of the game when Zack Zulkanycz scored on an assist from Matt Morse. With 1:35, Homer found the equalizer. Kai Simmons scored on assists from Hannah Baird and Erik Rosencrans.
