FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) -- The extension of Sen. Frank Murkowski's family into Alaska politics stalled as one of the Republican's daughters failed to unseat a popular Democratic incumbent.
Eileen Murkowski Van Wyhe, a stay-at-home mother and sometime political consultant, got only 36 percent of the vote in the race to represent Fairbanks' university district. Democrat John Davies won 64 percent of the vote.
Her sister, Lisa Murkowski, won an Anchorage seat in the House two years ago. She ran unopposed in Tuesday's election.
Van Wyhe said the Murkowski name was a mixed blessing this year.
''Some people obviously think it's great; they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree,'' Van Wyhe said. ''There's other people that just can't stand Murkowskis.''
