FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A Fairbanks man charged with felony sexual assault has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge that carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison.
Walt Herreid was indicted in March on one count each of first- and second-degree sexual assault in the attack of a woman in his home. On Thursday, Herreid agreed to plead no contest to third-degree attempted sexual assault.
Prosecutor Teresa Foster said the incident that led to the charges occurred in January after a night of drinking. Foster said Herreid and woman were acquaintances.
Foster said the woman alleged that Herreid ignored her rebuffs to his advances.
Defense attorney Kenneth Covell contended that the victim had made false allegations against other people in the past.
Herreid is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 19.
