Longtime Kasilof resident Irton Slone died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, of a heart attack at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 70.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Burger family homestead, Mile 121.5 of the Sterling Highway off Falls Creek Road in Clam Gulch. Father Frank Reiter will officiate. Pallbearers will include Jeffrey Slone, John Slone, James Slone, Dallas Burford, Tom Riker and Brock See. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Tustumena Lodge in Kasilof.
Mr. Slone was born Sept. 18, 1933, in Hollybush, Ky. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and served in the Armored Division in Korea until he was honorably discharged Dec. 16, 1955. He moved to Kasilof in March of 1958, where he homesteaded in the Crooked Creek area. He opened the I & D Garage, which he owned and operated since 1960. Mr. Slone also worked for ARCO as a lead mechanic from 1971 until he retired in 1985. Upon retirement, he resumed working in his garage until his death.
Mr. Slone enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing pool and, in his younger years, playing competitive ping-pong. He was a ranked ping-pong player in the military.
"Our dad was a kind, honest, caring, generous and loving husband and father. He was a much cared for and honorable man. He will be, and is, missed by everyone who knew and loved him. We miss you, Dad!" his family said.
Mr. Slone was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Nannie Slone; siblings, Daffie Slone, Farris Slone, Cash Slone, Lelie Caudill and Sada Alafita; and children, Elizabeth and Michael.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Tamara Slone of Kasilof; son and daughter in-law, James and Kathleen Slone and their children, Michael and Zada Slone, all of Kenai; daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and David Whitsett and their children, Kacey and Isabel Whitsett, all of Moreno Valley, Calif.; son, Jeffrey Slone of Kasilof; daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Casey Watts of Kenai; son, John Slone of Seattle; and siblings, Jeff Slone of Kentucky, Breman Slone of Ohio, Graden Slone of Kentucky, Ocie Caudill of Kentucky, Dalie Robinson of Kentucky, Ora Thornsberry of Kentucky, Lola Caudill of Kentucky, Rose Dingus of Kentucky, Yvonne Burton of Ohio and Bernice Viock of Ohio.
