Valley teams sweep III/4A volleyball tourney

Palmer High School won the Region III/4A volleyball tournament hosted by Colony Saturday. Palmer defeated the host Knights in five games.

Wasilla clinched third place with a three-game win over Kodiak.

Skyview, the defending region champions, overcame a two-game deficit to defeat the Kenai Kardinals in five games and advance to the consolation semifinals Friday.

Skyview dropped the first two games 18-25 and 8-25 before rebounding for 25-20, 25-20 and 15-13 wins.

The victory kept Skyview alive for a shot at making its fourth straight trip to the state tournament.

Kodiak 3, Skyview 0

Kodiak swept Skyview from the tournament Saturday, winning 25-18, 25-12, 25-9 to advance to the consolation finals Saturday against Wasilla.

Homer 3, Soldotna 1

The Homer Mariners got three wins by identical 25-11 margins Friday to defeat the Soldotna Stars in consolation round play at Colony High School.

Homer took the first two games before Soldotna battled back for a 26-28 win in the third.

The Mariners quickly recovered to take the fourth game, advancing to face Wasilla in the consolation semifinals Saturday.

Wasilla 3, Homer 1

After winning game one, Homer dropped three straight to join Skyview as the last peninsula teams to be bounced from the Region III/4A tournament Saturday.

Homer thrashed the Warriors 25-15 in the first game, but Wasilla was able to recover for 19-25, 18-25, 17-25 wins and a berth in the consolation finals Saturday against Kodiak.
