Sports, activity poster contest offered

The Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA), in conjunction with Alaska Airlines, will sponsor a statewide poster contest. The contest is designed for teens to encourage their peers to get involved with sports and activities offered through Alaska's high schools.

The contest will be judged in two areas: visual artwork and a catchy phrase, title or quote (referenced). Originality, creativity and overall effectiveness also will be considered in the judging.

The deadline to submit artwork and a completed entry form is Jan. 26. Winners will be notified and announced by the end of February.

Top designs will be made into large posters and distributed to 200-plus Alaska high schools in the spring and fall 2004.

Entries must be two-dimensional only and 11 inches by 17 inches in size.

Student-artists may use paints, pencils, colored pencils, markers, ink pens, photography and collage to create their visual designs. Each student may submit up to three designs.

Prizes are valued at more than $2,000. Two grand prize tickets with Alaska Airlines are valid for air travel in 2004, coach-class, round-trip between two Alaska Airlines destinations within Alaska or on the U.S. Domestic West Coast, i.e. Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona and Nevada. In addition to this grand prize, the contest offers a second-place prize of $100, third place, $50, and fourth place, $25.

There is a $10 cost-based entry fee per student. Entry forms can be obtained at the ASAA Web site at
