Kindergarten through third-grade students are invited to a fire prevention puppet show at 11 a.m. today at the Soldotna Church of God on the corner of Binkley and Redoubt.

There will be a private showing of the movie "The Polar Express" (rated G) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Kambe Theatre in Kenai. All home-school families are welcome. Space is limited. Tickets need to be prepurchased at the office. The cost is $5 for children and adults.

The Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward home-school program is Friday and is titled "Magnificent Marine Mammals." Students can spend the day discovering why some marine mammals have so much fur and others have so little. It is a day program that begins at 9 a.m. for grades kindergarten through second, three through five, six through eight and nine through 12. November book clubs Scholastic, Troll and Trumpet, for kindergartners through 12-graders, are available in the office. Orders should be brought to Tanya prior to Friday.

The Kids Are Authors contest for kindergartners through eighth-graders is offered to encourage students to use reading, writing and artistic skills to create their own books. Students will work in teams of three or more to write and illustrate their own book. Scholastic Book Fairs will publish the winning books and distribute them at book fairs throughout the country. Entries must be postmarked by March 15 to be eligible for the competition. For entry forms, visit their Web site at http:// teacher.sholastic.com/activities/kaa/rules.htm.

Students in grades four through 12 are invited to enter Letters About Literature 2005, a national writing contest sponsored by the Alaska Center for the Book and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. The contest deadline is Dec. 4. To enter, students must write a letter to an author, living or dead, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves. The last day to register for the Pudewa Excellence in Writing Workshop is Thursday. Call Tanya to sign up.

Battle of the Books is in full swing. Kindergarten through eighth-grade teams meet from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays at the office.
