Vandalism becoming intolerable

Posted: Wednesday, November 10, 2010

What are the odds of being the victim of vandalism more than once in a year?

My family moved to Alaska two years ago. We finally were able to afford to buy some land in Nikiski and start building a house this last summer. Our property was vandalized recently and hard earned possessions were ruined. Then our mailbox was trashed and we are stuck hemorrhaging money trying to get back to normal.

Things are getting out of hand. We are not the first family to suffer from this and I am pretty sure we will not be the last. Whoever is vandalizing property is not conscious of the impact they are having on families just trying to get by. I do not feel safe in my home and we cannot afford to make repairs.

Where is the action? Why don't we hear anything about this epidemic? The Clarion should do a story on the rise in vandalism in the Nikiski, Kenai and Soldotna areas. From teens killing dogs to obscene graffiti on the highway; something needs to be done.
