Troopers say Nenana men not missing

Posted: Monday, November 11, 2002

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Alaska State Troopers say two Nenana men feared missing on a boat trip on the Tanana River are safe and are not overdue.

Trooper Brian Wassmann says a search was launched Sunday for William Fairbanks Sr. and William Fairbanks Jr. The two had left for a boat trip on the river Saturday.

Wassman said troopers were told the men were missing, but investigators weren't able to locate family members to determine exactly when the two were due back.

''We just had third-hand, sketchy information,'' Wassman said. ''In fact, they were not overdue.''

Wassman says troopers decided to err on the side of caution and flew over the route the two men took, but saw no sign of them or their boat.

Wassman says troopers later learned that the two men were not due back on Saturday. They had taken camping gear and were prepared to stay out for a few days.
