Senior takes the plunge to mark her anniversary

Posted: Tuesday, November 11, 2003

PROVO, Utah (AP) Don and Marion Peterson have been flying high since they got married a year ago.

He renewed his pilot's license, taught her how to fly and has taken her paragliding.

But for the 78-year-olds' first wedding anniversary on Saturday, Marion Peterson celebrated with her first skydive.

''A lady that old is usually old, you know what I mean? But she's kind of a fireball,'' Don Peterson said.

Marion Peterson said her husband came up with the idea. ''And I said, 'Why not? I can't do it any younger.'''

Before boarding the airplane, Peterson, in white Reeboks and a crisp sweat shirt, said she wasn't nervous.

I'm getting excited,'' she said as tandem master Kurry Lewis helped her put on garb for the chilly weather.

''She's a natural skydiver,'' Lewis said after the jump. ''Age doesn't matter. Anyone can jump.''

Marion took off her goggles, smoothed down her hair and gave her husband, then Lewis a hug.

''It was great,'' she said.
