Week of activities celebrates Soldotna Community Schools

Posted: Sunday, November 12, 2000

Soldotna Community School is celebrating its anniversary with a week of special events, culminating with an open house and reception Tuesday, which is National Community Education Day. More entertainment opportunities follow in December.

Basketball and soccer: The gentlemen's basketball and the teen indoor soccer will be free throughout the week.

Bookmarks at River City Books: Tuesday the store will be passing out commemorative bookmarks for patrons. But that's not all. Between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., 20 percent of the price of all sales will be donated to community schools.

Reception: Soldotna Middle School, the home of the community schools program, will open its doors Tuesday at 7 p.m. Donna Peterson, superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, and Ken Lancaster, mayor and House representative-elect of Soldotna, will be featured speakers. Community schools boosters will be honored for their contributions.

Everyone is invited for an evening of free family fun, including contests for children of all ages. Classes in the building will be open for tours, including "toddler time," basketball and courses on retirement, computers, investments, hunter education and landlord-tenant law. Refreshments, including goodies from the Cajun cooking class, will be available.

Community Magic Show: Don Russell, "The Magic Guy" from Anchorage returns to Soldotna for a free show at 7 p.m. Thursday at Soldotna High School. Although he won't be bringing his magic dog, this will be a full production.

Adult craft show and sale: This is a new event at Soldotna Middle School in the multipurpose room from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, offering the community a jump on holiday shopping. Parents can attend the show while their children are at their own craft fair. Booth spaces are available.

Make-It Take-It Craft Fair: This annual favorite for children in kindergarten through sixth grade will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Soldotna Middle School. The Soldotna High School National Honor Society co-sponsors the event.

Air Force Brass Quartet Community Concert: Everyone is invited to a free concert Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at Soldotna Middle School.

Community Free Skate: The Soldotna Sports Center offers a free skating session Dec. 19 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

For more information or to sign up for a booth at the crafts fair, call the community schools office at 262-6768.
