The Skyview Panthers shut out the Monroe Rams of Fairbanks on Saturday, 4-0. The Panthers skated their way to victory at the Soldotna Sports Center, and both coaches agreed it was a good, clean game.
"Skyview played a good, clean game," said Monroe coach Mark Weber. "We appreciate it."
Panthers coach Indy Walton echoed those comments and praised players on both teams. But he also said the Panthers have some work to do.
This season started a week earlier than usual, Walton said, which made it difficult for players to get in the required 10 practices they need in order to participate in games. He also noted that four students were not eligible to play because of their grades.
"We didn't look too bad," Walton said of his team's performance Saturday. "They looked like we had 5 a.m. practices all week, which we did."
Still, Walton said, the team played well.
"We had a good showing this week," he said.
Skyview's record is 2-1 this season.
Panther Daryl Sachitz scored the first goal of the game in the first period. Jeremy Mercier also scored in the first period.
"I couldn't believe it," Mercier said of his score. Mercier said he has been playing hockey for three years.
Chris Bouwens scored the third goal for the Panthers, in the second period.
"I was pretty psyched," Bouwens said. He said he has been playing hockey for about 10 years.
Taylor Adams scored the Panthers' fourth goal, in the third period.
Weber said the Rams will face Glennallen at Glennallen next week, and that playing large schools like Skyview helps him assess his team.
"It kind of gives you an idea of where you're at," he said.
"We're improving (with) every game," he added.
Skyview will play Houston on Friday and Wasilla Saturday, Walton said.
