UConn women advance in NIT

STORRS, Conn. -- Diana Taurasi scored 21 points, and Swin Cash added 17 to lead top-ranked Connecticut over Florida International 91-47 Sunday in the second round of the preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament.

UConn (2-0) will play North Carolina in a semifinal on Thursday.

The Golden Panthers (1-1) were never able to match UConn's speedy transition game or the Huskies' dominating post play.

The Huskies outrebounded FIU 51-31, led by Asjha Jones' nine boards.

Gergana Slavtcheva led FIU with 10 points.

No. 3 Vanderbilt 81, Oregon St. 55

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jenni Benningfield scored 15 points as No. 3 Vanderbilt routed Oregon State in the second round of the Preseason Women's NIT.

Vanderbilt (2-0) will play Colorado in a midweek semifinal.

The Commodores overcame a scoreless first half by Chantelle Anderson to take a 37-25 lead as Benningfield scored 10 points and Ashley McElhiney nine.

Oregon State (1-1) led 6-2 in the opening three minutes, but Benningfield and McElhiney connected on consecutive 3-pointers to make the score 8-6. The Beavers never led again.

Leilani Estavan made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points for Oregon State. Erica Cook added 12.

No. 4 Oklahoma 80, No. 11 Purdue 75

DURHAM, N.C. -- Rosalind Ross scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half as No. 4 Oklahoma beat No. 11 Purdue in the Women's Tip-Off Classic.

Purdue (0-1) led 70-67 after a layup by Erika Valek with 3:53 left, but Ross hit a 3-pointer and LaNeishea Caufield scored on a 3-point play with 2:20 left.

Ross hit another 3-pointer to give Oklahoma a 76-72 lead with 53 seconds left and the Sooners made four straight free throws down the stretch.

Purdue's Laura Meadows had 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Shereka Wright added 15 points, and Kelly Komara had 10 points and seven assists.

No. 5 Duke 85, No. 7 Texas Tech 69

DURHAM, N.C. -- Monique Currie opened her career at Duke with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the No. 5 Blue Devils over No. 7 Texas Tech.

Iciss Tillis had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Duke in its season-opener in the Women's Tipoff Classic. Sheana Mosch also had 16 points. Wynter Whitley added 11 points and Alana Beard 10 points with six assists.

Jia Perkins led Texas Tech (0-1) with 27 points. Natalie Ritchie had 16 and Plenette Pierson 10 for the Lady Raiders.

Texas Tech missed 11 of its first 12 shots of the second half.

as Duke opened up a 62-40 margin. Texas Tech never got closer than 70-58 in the last 17:05 of the game.

No. 12 Colorado 78, New Mexico 63

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Mandy Nightingale scored 24 points, and Jenny Roulier added 17 as No. 12 Colorado beat New Mexico in the second round of the preseason WNIT.

Nightingale scored 18 points in the first half, and Roulier had 14 in the second half as the Buffaloes (2-0) advanced to the semifinals against Vanderbilt. Tera Bjorklund added 15 for Colorado.

Mandi Moore led New Mexico (1-1) with 15 points and 5 assists. Jordan Adams added 14 points.
