I had a visit from my nieces the other day. Sarah (9 years old) and MacKenzie (6 years old) noticed a picture of Irton Slone in the paper. They proceeded to tell me some stories about him.
"I liked Irton," said Sarah, "he was a nice man." "He gave us cookies, sometimes three or four!" "He had a big bag of peanuts in the shell and would pour a bunch out on my Dad's Scout and we would sit and eat them and visit."
They both agreed, yes, he was a nice man.
It would be difficult to find someone in this community who didn't know and care for him. Many were touched by this gentle man with his easy smile and soft-spoken manner.
His passing has left a sadness in many hearts, both young and old. It will take a long time to get used to not seeing the smoke coming out of the chimney at his shop. We will all miss this "nice man."
