The national Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards Program, sponsored locally by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary of the Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post No. 10046, soon will be over for the year. The deadline for submitting artwork is Dec. 10.
Historically, there have been few entries from other parts of the state, so Kenai Peninsula high school students including home-school students are encouraged to enter.
Monetary awards will be given at the school level, with the overall winner from the area receiving an additional award and moving on to the state contest. The first-place state winner's entry will be forwarded to national judging, where the first-place prize is $10,000, a jacket, a plaque and airfare plus two nights lodging to attend the 2004 Ladies Auxiliary National Convention in Cincinnati next August.
For more information, contact an area high school art teacher, call program chair Billie Huddleston at 283-9443 or visit www.ladies auxvfw.com.
