Former Ninilchik resident Alex Maklezow died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, in Tempe, Ariz., of pancreatic cancer. He was 55.
A celebration of his life will be held Jan. 25 at the Inlet View Restaurant Bar and Lounge in Ninilchik.
Mr. Maklezow was born Jan. 25, 1951, in Klienkez, Germany. He attended school through high school, worked as a bartender and carpenter and most recently lived in Tempe.
He enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, watching the Speed and NASA stations, listening to music, watching videos, reading and fixing things. He was the “greatest procrastinator,” his family said.
“Alex was always grouchy. He dearly loved his family and friends. He was keen, knowledgeable, intelligent and very wise. He was a very strong force. He spoke very little but people always listened to him and what he had to say. He had a very tender side that one could not help fall in love with him when they got to know him. He loved living in Ninilchik, Alaska. He will truly be missed,” his family said.
Mr. Maklezow is survived by his mother, Lili Garmasch, of Rock City, Ill.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hank and Myrt of Rockford, Ill., Viktor and Olga of the Virgin Islands and Val and Marty McQuiston of Ninilchik; sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Larry Geisinger of Tempe; sister-in-law, Susan Schuld of Carpentersville, Ill.; uncle, Wally Reichert of Chicago; seven nephews, five nieces, three grand-nephews and five grandnieces.
