You've got to see the 'Magic Planet'

Kenai's Challenger Learning Center of Alaska will host a Star Party Nov. 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This is a free and fun community event for all ages. Enjoy inside and outside activities with the crew at Challenger. Come check out the brand new "Magic Planet," which will be debuted during this event. There will even be free hot dogs thanks to Peterkin! Dress warm and hope for clear skies. For information, please call 283-2000.

Lutherans host holiday bazaar

Lutheran Women's Missionary League members and members from the South Alaska Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are hosting a Christmas Bazaar to help mission projects locally, nationally and internationally. The bazaar will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Star of the North Lutheran Church, 216 N. Forest Dr., in Kenai. Baked goods and craft items will be available for sale to provide funds for mission projects. Past donations have been given to LeeShore Center, Kenai Peninsula Community Care Center, Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, Lutheran World Relief, Concordia College, Concordia Seminary, Habitat for Humanity and others. Need turkey cooking tips?

Many Alaskans cook turkey only once or twice a year. For free information on selecting, thawing, cooking turkey and storing leftovers, contact the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service. Stop by the Extension Service's Kenai Peninsula District Office at 43961 K-Beach Road, Suite A and register to win a meat thermometer. Drawing will be held Nov. 22. Holiday bazaar this weekend

The Sterling Senior Center hosts its annual Christmas Bazaar, Nov. 12 and 13, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center. Hand crafted items can be sold (no imports). Table rental is $25 per table for vendors. Please call Glenda Graham at 262-2943 or the Senior Center to reserve your spot. Tables are limited, so sign up for your space early. There will also be a bake sale with delicious homemade cakes, cookies, brownies, candies, jams, pies and many other yummies! The Elderberry Caf will be open both days from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to serve chili, sandwiches and snacks. All proceeds benefit the Sterling Senior Center.

Church sale and donations coming up

The United Methodist Church of the New Covenant is accepting donations for its fall Basement Sale. Gently used items may be brought to the church and left on the covered front porch. Items may be brought to the side door during sale set-up on Wednesday or during the sale itself. The sale will be Friday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The little brown church is located on the Kenai Spur Highway across from Wells Fargo in Kenai. Birders meet

Keen Eye Birders meet Saturday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association. On the meeting agenda: Learn about the wonderful opportunities for winter birding on the Kenai Peninsula. Ken Tarbox will share his knowledge, tips and hotspots for winter birding in our area. Future plans for the Keen Eye Birder's are the Christmas Bird Count, a Winter Birding Festival and a progressive dinner, coinciding with the Backyard Bird Count. Developmental screenings available

Frontier Community Services Infant Learning Program and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will conduct free Child Find developmental screenings for children from birth to age 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at Suite 16 in the Red Diamond Center, across from AKKuts Hair Design. Library hosts game day event

Join the Soldotna Public Library, as thousands of libraries across the country host special gaming events in celebration of National Gaming Day at your library. Come and play board games with us! The library will have a number of popular board games available, or bring your favorite game to share. Sign up for prize drawing sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Lutefisk and Lefse on the menu

Chirst Lutheran Church will host its annual Lutefisk and Lefse Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13. The church is located at Mile 1/4 of the Kenai Spur Highway in Soldotna. Donations will be accepted at the door. For more information, call 262-4757.

Volunteers Needed

Re-Group is helping coordinate an Electronic Recycling Event Nov. 13. Volunteers are needed to help collect, deliver and check in materials that can provide a source of valuable metals to be reused in future products.
