Sports Brief: Seward moves to state semis

The Seward volleyball team defeated Monroe Catholic 27-25, 25-16 and 25-15 on Thursday in the opening round of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament at Dimond High School in Anchorage.

Seward moves into today's semifinal against Mt. Edgecumbe, which defeated Barrow. The other semifinal will be at 5:30 p.m. and feature Grace Christian, which topped Delta Junction, and Dillingham, which topped Craig.

The first day of the Class 4A state tournament saw all the Northern Lights Conference teams lose. Palmer fell to Dimond, Colony lost to West Valley and Wasilla lost to South. The 3:45 p.m. semifinal features Chugiak and Dimond, while the 7:15 p.m. semi features West Valley and South.
