FAIRANKS (AP) -- A man whom Fairbanks police say is a serial rapist was convicted Wednesday of two counts of first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and third-degree assault.

Steven J. Basurto was convicted for a 1999 attack on a Fairbanks woman.

In testimony, victims and police painted a picture of a man who offered rides to women, drove them to remote areas and attacked them.

''We dealt with three victims up here,'' said Fairbanks Police Department Detective Sgt. Dan Hoffman.

Basurto was arrested after a woman who acknowledged being a part-time prostitute was attacked. The woman said Basurto offered her a ride but instead drove to a remote area and assaulted her. She recorded his license plate number and called police.
