Alaska SeaLife Center news

Repairs to begin

The Alaska SeaLife Center announced a plan to begin facility repairs. The center received a $10 million settlement to repair construction deficiencies.

The center required work to repair structural damage, including habitat tank leakage, concrete problems and paint and finish problems. Deficiencies in mechanical and life support systems also must be corrected.

The five-phase repair plan began this month and is scheduled to end in early summer 2002. It is designed to minimize disruptions to the animals that live at the center and in research, rehabilitation and education projects. Exhibit animals will be moved to other areas in the center as repair work begins.

Admission prices will be reduced when two or more major exhibits are not available for viewing.

Holiday party planned

The Seward Holiday Party will be held Nov. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Alaska SeaLife Center. The party is open to the public.

There will be a Favorite Pumpkin Recipe Cookoff at the party. Food must be delivered to the center by 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 24. Each entrant may enter one item. All goods become the property of the center and will be shared with everyone attending the Seward Holiday Party immediately following the judging.

Entry blanks may be picked up at the center, or call (907) 224-6312 to have a form faxed.

Gingerbread house contest

The Alaska SeaLife Center presents a gingerbread house contest Dec. 2 to 9. There is a $25 entry fee and the winner gets two tickets to Hawaii.

For more information, call (800) 224-2525.
