Colony JV wins King of Mountain

The Colony junior varsity scored 267 points on Friday and Saturday to win the King of the Mountain wrestling tournament in Seward.

Kenai Central led peninsula teams by finishing second with 180 points, while Seward was third, Soldotna was fifth, Nikiski was seventh, Voznesenka was eighth, Seldovia was 10th, Ninilchik was 11th and Cook Inlet Academy was 12th.

Colony won six of the 14 weight classes at the meet. Kenai took three of the weight classes, with Jaron Dambacher winning at 160, Michael Dormady winning at 189 and Michael Canavan winning at heavyweight. The other champion from the peninsula was Ninilchik’s Austin Vanderford, who won at 152.

Homer wins Coal Point Cup

The Homer hockey team defeated Juneau-Douglas, Glennallen and Delta on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Homer to win the Coal Point Cup.

On Thursday, the Mariners defeated the Crimson Bears 11-2. Adam Trieweiler had a hat trick in the game, while Josh Pitta had two goals and six assists. Homer’s Ben Miller played the first two periods and made six saves on eight shots, while third-string goalie Andy Rosencrans played the third period and made seven saves on seven shots.

Also Thursday, Glennallen defeated Delta 4-3 with freshman Ryan Crow scoring two goals. Crow would go on to be named the tournament’s most valuable player.

On Friday, Homer defeated Glennallen 6-5. The Mariners had to overcome two goals and three assists from Crow to tally the victory.

In the first period, Crow had two goals and an assist as Glennallen jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Mariners stormed back with five goals in the second period to take a 5-3 lead. Captain Keith Bell had two goals in the period, one assisted by Trieweiler and the other assisted by Erik Rasmussen and Patrick Pozzi. Also scoring in the period were Dima Kalugin, Derek Martushev, assisted by Josh Pitta, and Trieweiler, assisted by Pozzi.

Homer started the third period with an unassisted goal by Pozzi. Glennallen’s Dillon Sondergaard scored two goals assisted by Crow but goalie Luke Eckert, who had 14 saves in the game, hung on for his first varsity win. In other action Friday, Delta defeated Juneau 5-3.

Saturday, Homer clinched the title by defeating Delta 4-0. The goals came from Pozzi, assisted by Aaron Lewis; Bell; Trieweiler, assisted by Rasmussen and Bell; and Trieweiler, assisted by Rasmussen. Miller made 10 saves for the Mariners. In the other game on Saturday, Glennallen defeated Juneau.
