Longtime Soldotna resident Betty Jane Orth passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at Central Peninsula Hospital with her family by her side. She was 83.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Her cremated remains will be inurned in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Galesburg, Mich., next to her husband. Please contact Mark Orth for more information about the services at 907-262-1596.
Ms. Orth was born Sept. 14, 1927, to Merle Walter and Winona Viola (Cumings) Chapin in Kalamazoo, Mich. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1945 and furthered her education by attending Western Michigan College. On June 21, 1967, she moved to Alaska, living in various places around the state, including Anchorage, Birchwood, Cordova and Sterling, before making Soldotna her final home. Ms. Orth worked for the Kalamazoo Health Department, the Cordova Community Hospital, Peninsula Appraisal Group and, finally, for Central Peninsula Hospital for 19 years before retiring in 2007 at the age of 78. She attended several Methodist churches.
Ms. Orth loved watching her movies, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, golfing, bowling, cribbage, backgammon and loved playing cards with her family.
The family wrote, "She enjoyed family gatherings at her home. Betty enjoyed traveling and visiting family. She visited every Coast Guard duty station of her youngest son, 'Alfie.' Betty cherished all of her children and grandchildren."
Ms. Orth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy; son, Norman; brothers, James and David; and her sister-in-law, Doris Chapin.
She is survived by her sons, David Orth and his wife, April, of Kenai; Mark Orth and his wife, Connie, of Sterling; Gordon Orth and his wife, Laurie, of Soldotna; and Alfred "Alfie" Orth and his wife, Janelle, of Kaneohe, Hawaii; daughter, Barbara Webber and her husband, James, of Cordova; and Lori J. Orth, of Soldotna; sister, Mary Fisher and her husband, Ronald, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; sister-in-law, Jackie Chapin, of Galesburg, Mich.; grandchildren, Latavia, Jamie, Stacie, Erin, Jennifer, Lisa, Shelby, Madison, Jesse, Justin, Michael, Ian, Keenan and Virginia; 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Betty C/O Mark Orth P.O. Box 406 Sterling, Alaska 99672. Contributions will be donated to various charities in her name.
