Skyview, Nikiski wrestlers get mat time

The Skyview High School wrestling team was able squeeze in another dual meet — albeit a quick one — Tuesday, hosting Nikiski and a pair of wrestlers from Ninilchik.

“We were actually hoping to get a few more matches. I was happy to have a couple of kids from Ninilchik come up,” said Skyview coach Neldon Gardner.

Gardner’s Panthers are just a couple weeks into the class 4A wrestling season, and the coach is trying to get as much mat time for his wrestlers as he can.

Nikiski and Ninilchik, meanwhile, are nearly two months into the class 1-2-3A season, and are working toward their district tournaments beginning Dec. 2.

“Skyview is a competent team. It’s good to wrestle against them,” said Nikiski coach Lucas Peless. “We’re fine-tuning basic moves. We have one more tournament and one more tri-meet, then regions.”

Peless, in his first year coaching the Bulldogs, said he has a young team with several first- and second-year wrestlers. Peless said he was pleased to see his athletes wrestle hard against Skyview.

“I’m proud of them every time they go out there and wrestle hard. They’re doing moves, countering moves and figuring out how to wrestle more aggressively. That just takes time, and that’s why duals are great,” Peless said.

Josh Vance posted a victory for the Bulldogs, winning his match at 160 pounds by major decision.

Skyview picked up wins in the other six matches contested, with Dan Maciariello (112), Michaela Hutchison (119), Luke Morse (130), Eli Hutchison (135), Tony Gibson (140) and Pat Sheridan earning victories.

Gardner said he was pleased with the effort from his team. Skyview and Nikiski will head to the North-South Tournament this weekend in Wasilla.

“It’ll be a good tournament. It’ll be a good follow-up to Chugiak (last weekend, where the Panthers finished third),” Gardner said. “We were excited by how well we finished at Chugiak with our numbers. We only had 16 kids able to suit up.”
