ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The body of a 47-year-old Napakiak man feared drowned Wednesday was recovered by searchers Thursday.

William Billy was reported missing just before midnight Wednesday.

Troopers said they received a report from the Napakiak village police officer that Billy and Kenneth Jimmy, 35, had walked from Bethel to a fish camp about 2-3 miles west of the village in the Napakiak Slough.

When the men tried to return, they found that the water in the slough had risen and they were unable to wade across.

Both men tried to swim. Troopers said Jimmy made it safely across the slough but Billy disappeared.

Jimmy walked to Napakiak, arriving at around 7:48 p.m., and alerted Napakiak Search and Rescue. Searchers found no signed of Billy.

Searchers returned to the slough Thursday morning and recovered Billy's body at about 1 p.m.

The state medical examiner declined an autopsy and the body was returned to the family.
